Mission San Juan Capistrano

Oct. 3rd 2012

I have been on a bit of a blogging hiatus due to technical difficulties and traveling this summer for some amazing destination weddings. I thought this 2 part wedding would be the perfect wedding to blog about to get back into the swing of things. As you can tell my images are small, so still trying to work out the kinks of my custom blog, my apologies. However, I hope you can see the genius in this wedding by A Good Affair Wedding and Event Production. Natalie’s weddings are always over the top and done with amazing taste and style, especially when you get amazing wedding venues like these. The Mission San Juan Capistrano is a dream wedding venue for any Southern California Wedding Photographer. The Spanish landscape is breathtaking and romantic boasting endless places to capture dream wedding images. The Mission is also the oldest building in all of California, so it is a very special place dripping with history and wonder. The Batista is a small Catholic Chapel on the premises and Victoria & Greg chose to have their military wedding there. Since this wedding is so awesome, I have way too many images to share in just one blog. I will blog first about the mission and their romantic images, and in the second blog I will showcase the Classy Wedding Reception at the Newport Hyatt Regency. I will link the part 2 blog here when it is published. Thank you Natalie and all the other vendors featured below for another GREAT wedding!

My Family Photoshoot in Boise, Idaho

Apr. 18th 2012

I am still working hard on a new custom blog, so I apologize for the uncompleted blog but I could not wait anymore to share our families shoot! I love this photoshoot in our backyard right outside of Boise, Idaho. Shot by the talented Kelly Zimmerman with Cherished Images, a link to her website below! Kelly did such a great job creating the reality of our family. I wanted a shoot where our animals could be included and I wanted a few silly shots since that is us, from formal to fun! I will be writing a follow up blog about our new lives in Boise and the difference between the city life and country life. It has been over a year now that our family has relocated and we are really enjoying life here. The first family picture include 2 of our dogs, 2 chickens, and you cannot tell but I am holding one of our teacup piglets. This was not the easiest shoot to pull off, so thanks again Kelly for coming to the house and shooting these for me!

We took my favorite images from the photoshoot and Kelly designed a great Spring card on canvas linen paper!

Product photography is very important to showcase whatever it is you are selling. Sometimes you are even the product, for example if you are a real estate agent. I have seen too many websites and facebook pages with obvious non-professional images, and it does not help your product or you. Everybody that has a Facebook and/or Website should hire a professional photographer to shoot your products and/or you. They should be overall very consistent, with no bells or whistles in my opinion. Your product should stand alone with no cheesy blanket backdrop or flowers ordaining your products. Don’t skimp here, this is essentially your storefront, you want your product to look it’s best from the beginning of marketing even social marketing to get interest, and for professionalism. Some photographers may even be willing to do some bartering with whatever your product is, it doesn’t hurt to ask. Have your business be taken seriously by hiring a professional, it is worth every penny!

Wedding Reception in Beverly Hills

Feb. 26th 2012

>

This Beverly Hills Wedding Reception was super unique! Planned at the Lawry’s Steak House in LA, it really was a beautiful spot with a unique dinner service. The salad portion of the meal was a cool sight, they put on a show for you and it is fun. The actual dinner is served in front of you, where chefs have big portions of prime rib cut to your liking. The DJ Company did a great job with the lighting and party and they are super popular in the LA area, check out their site at www.thedjaycompany.com. Joanna from http://www.jsoiree-events.com/ did a fabulous job designing and coordinating this entire wedding. For part 1 of this wedding including the getting ready’s, ceremony, and romantics, check out this link: http://jaimeehubert.blogspot.com/2012/02/downtown-la-wedding.html

The bride is Mexican and the Groom is Korean, so they had a spread of some very yummy looking Korean food that I have never seen before!

Lawry’s puts on a show while they wait on you, pretty cool, never seen that before!
Right in the heart of Los Angeles!

Downtown Fullerton Family Photo Shoot

Feb. 8th 2012

>

I LOVE shooting my families year after year, they are almost always my former brides and grooms, like this family. I get to watch them fall in love on the engagement shoot, stand before them on their wedding day, photograph their pregnancy pictures, then photograph their beautiful babies and then eventually their family, with multiple kids, dogs, and all. It is really cool to watch and be a part of documenting a couples lives together! Some families I have shot for over 7 years and the kids know exactly who I am and are excited for their shoots, it is fun to watch them grow and be their family photograper. I travel to Orange County every 6-8 weeks to shoot weddings and always usually do a shoot day to accommodate all of my former couples and their families. Congrats Veronica and Daniel on your gorgeous little boy Dominick!

"Fire Painting" and How-To Blog

Feb. 6th 2012

>

I had so much fun shooting for fun the other night with a few other local photographers. There is a local photographers board that is very active and the photographers get together often to do fun shoots with each other and but their heads together, it is a really cool group. When I saw a “Fire Painting” night I thought that was really interesting. Come to find out they needed a location and my backyard was perfect. You need a wide open space to pull this off. I had no idea what we were doing but once I saw some of the results I was really excited, as I have not shot for fun in almost a decade!

What you are seeing here is Steel Wool (fine) stuffed in a whisk and tied to a cord. There is a person in all of these photos swinging the cord and the results are the steel wool breaks apart and a lot of sparks fly. Some of the pics she had one cord that she was spinning and for a few of them she was spinning 2 cords. I shot with my Canon 5D Mark II and a 14mm wide angle “fish eye” lens. With long exposures of 10-30 seconds you get really cool images. There was a little trial and error getting the right exposures down, the correct white balance, low ISO, and the fire painter took a few tries to get it down. The steel wool did not last as long as we had hoped in some cases only 10-20 seconds. Even though this was a first attempt I love the results. We will be doing this again and begin to perfect it and come up with new ideas and different locations. You notice you can see the person in some of the images and this was done using an off camera flash to illuminate her face while spinning the cord in a perfect circle.

F:8 @ 15 seconds, 100 ISO, Tungsten White Balance
 F:7.1 @ 15 seconds, 100 ISO, Tungsten White Balance
An Off Camera Flash allows you to see the subjects face in these.
F:7.1 @ 10 seconds, 100 ISO, Tungsten White Balance, with off camera flash

F:7.1 @ 30 seconds, 100 ISO, Tungsten White Balance
 F:7.1 @ 30 seconds, 100 ISO, Tungsten White Balance

Congrats to My Daddy, Mayor Jim Dow

Dec. 14th 2011

>

I have never blogged about my father and since he was passed the gavel last night as his 3rd and last term as Mayor of Buena Park, I found it befitting. Twelve years ago, my Dad and our family went on a bit of a quest to help our city in which the “Dow” family has lived in for 4 generations. We had a steep hill to climb as my father ran against 2 incumbents, and in the history of Buena Park nobody had ever won against an incumbent. For months we worked our hearts out and my Dad won by only 152 votes. We were ecstatic! Since then he has served twice as Mayor, and I am very proud to say that is is my fathers 3rd and final term as Mayor. Despite my father not having come from money, nor does he have a college degree, coupled with very serious health problems, he really has made his late parents proud. I am so proud of the legacy my Father has left his kids and grand kids. I love you Daddy!

>Long Beach Marina Engagement

Jul. 25th 2011

>

Love this colorful fun Engagement shoot of this super cute happy couple! The long Beach Marina was meaningful to this couple, especially the light house, which is why they chose the LB Marina for their perfect shoot. This couple just wed at Summit House in Fullerton and got married at St. Norberts, with Romantics in the historic Circle of Orange. The wedding was perfect and done by Natalie Good with A Good Affair….wedding blog to follow this week. Enjoy this cute engagement shoot, in which the couple took the images and did a reception sign in book with all of their engagement pics. Engagement shoots should reflect who the couple really is, and this couple is sweet, simple, fun, and happy in love!

>Baby’s First Photo Shoot

Jul. 20th 2011

>

Love New Baby Shoots in Studio, especially since I have a portable studio that I can take with me anywhere I go. New parents love the idea of not having to leave the home. You don’t have to get everyone ready, rush out with all of the loot, find parking, get out, etc, etc. So I come to the home and set up my humble studio and capture the magic of your new baby. Dad’s I have found especially love this. They never want to leave the house to go to the mall or a studio. Parents love the park too so older kids can run and play, it feel like the family is creating more memories vs. “producing” a photo shoot. Year after year I do shoot days at the park, and the kids and family look forward to this bi-annual shoot. For new babies, I find that anywhere from 2-12 weeks is great for the first baby pictures, depending on what you want to capture. I recommend studio look for the first shoot and then getting out in the world for most shoots after that. I love capturing the first and last moments of peoples lives, there is something very special about that. The images will literally be around forever! Invest in these type of shoots, they are priceless and you never get those moments again. Here is an example of a typical babies first photo shoot…..
